Bonbons the conduit for this piece of Magic Realism Schlockolat. English-speaking cast of heavyweights set incongruously in an insular French village where the devil’s apprentice herself, Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) rolls thru town like sin by opening a chocolate shop while gypsy Roux (Johnny Depp) is a Django Reinhardt-playing character opposite her. The pair alters the lives of suppressed locals thru example… making love & laughs on moonlit canoes, before converting the repressive church curate to the dark powers of… you guessed (on Easter Sunday, no less). Cinetherapy, a hotly estrogenic looking film, perhaps saved by the tender humanity of Rocher.
